This interactive map is a central repository, by country, for data sets, research, regulatory information, and more pertaining to the global health crisis of lead exposure and poisoning. The intent of the website is to increase awareness, understand the drivers of this crisis, and accelerate the pace of solutions.
The website was initially established to visualize the data presented in The Toxic Truth Report (2020), authored by Pure Earth and UNICEF, and Pure Earth's Toxic Sites Identification Program (TSIP). Exposure and mortality estimates for every country are drawn from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation’s Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study and refreshed as IHME releases updates. Because these figures are modeled, not measured, they should be interpreted as estimates rather than direct measurements of blood lead levels or health outcomes. Where available, select blood lead level surveys are shown alongside the modeled estimates to provide additional context on measured exposure; surveys that are planned but not yet published are listed on the upcoming surveys page. The map also incorporates additional research layers as they become available — see our Data Sources page for the current full list and citation guidance.
